Silent Prayer at Mass

At the beginning of Mass and after communion, the priests say a prayer, called the “collect prayer,” with the words “Let us pray”, and he pauses for a brief moment of silence. He is inviting each of us to individually and silently “collect” our whole self—body, mind, and spirit—to recognize that we are in God’s presence and to offer up our own prayers at this time. The presider then “collects” all of our individual prayers into the one prayer that he prays aloud.
